About Our Work

The Planetary Health in Practice (PHIP) Lab, led by Dr. Jessica LeClair, advances nurse-led solutions to the intertwined crises of climate change, environmental degradation, and health inequities. Our work focuses on strengthening public health nursing and nurse–community partnerships to address cumulative social and ecological stressors where people live, work, and heal.

Grounded in community-engaged research, relational ethics, and systems thinking, we collaborate with public health departments, community-based organizations, and interdisciplinary partners to co-design practical tools, training, and models of care. We study what works to promote planetary health, as well as how partnerships are built and sustained over time.

At its core, the PHIP Lab is committed to practice-relevant research that supports nurses as trusted leaders—helping public health systems move beyond harm reduction toward regenerative, community-centered approaches that protect both human health and the Earth systems on which it depends.

Our Vision

The Planetary Health in Practice Lab envisions a world where public health nursing helps shape upstream solutions to intertwined social and ecological challenges—supporting communities, strengthening systems, and advancing planetary health through care, partnerships, and prevention.
